Cat Wound With Pus

An abscess is a pocket of pus under the skin which occurs when bacteria which reside on the skin or teeth enter the body via a puncture wound most often by a bite during a cat fight.

Cat wound with pus. They often result from bites or scratches endured during cat fights eg between intact males or from puncture wounds from fangs scratches or pricks. An abscess will require another trip to your veterinarian. The abscess forms from the infection creating a cavity full of pus. Abscesses take about 10 to 14 days to develop and often are not noticed until they rupture.

The wound itself may or may not be oozing foul smelling pus which in some cases may include blood. The problem is often caused by puncture wounds perhaps from getting into fights with other cats or with other animals that have long sharp teeth and claws. Thats why a cat bite wound so often results in an abscess. If a wound especially a puncture wound was not seen and if your cat did not take antibiotics an abscess can form resulting in symptoms described at the beginning of this article.

Then use the cloth to wipe away all of the pus from your cats wound. Apply gentle pressure to the area around the abscess pressing inward towards the tooth mark through which the pus is draining. If your cat has a burst abscess a considerable volume of pus may leak from the wound. If the injury is a puncture wound in case of an infection you will notice pus and a foul odor.

The flaps of skin stretch out as pus fills the pocket formed around the tooth entry wounds and this allows the cat to get along better than animals like us or dogs where tight skin means significant pain and lost mobility if a pus pocket develops. An inflammatory response occurs drawing huge amounts of white blood cells to the area and increasing regional blood flow. The healed surface skin traps bacteria under the skin which will gradually fester and cause a painful swollen area and potentially a mass of pus. While most abscesses heal up well your cat could have been exposed to the feline leukemia or feline immunodeficiency virus through the bite.

An abscess will look like an open sore or a painful swelling on your cats skin. The majority of cat bites occur on the face tail and shoulders. If the infection is not a puncture wound it may spread in the nearby tissues and cause cellulitis. Take a clean rag or washcloth and soak it in warm water.

Rinse the cloth and repeat until all the visible pus is gone. It is generally characterized as a pocket of soft tissue that is filled with pus. Use dry cotton wool gauze or absorbent paper tissue to wipe away the pus. Cat saliva carries a lot of bacteria that may easily infect a bite wound.

Even cat scratches may get infected. An abscess is a localized infection of the skin. Often the fur at the site is missing or matted.
