Just like dogs cats age very rapidly during their first two years of life.

For example a kitten can be six or seven weeks old but appear to be far more advanced physically over a human baby of the same age. At one time or another weve all heard the expression dog years but most of us are unaware of how the relative age and weight of our pets is calculated by veterinarians and others in the pet health field.
And using this method we can calculate that at 16 years old your cat is around the age of a human 80 year old. They are much smarter at age 3 than their human counterparts. While a 16 year old small dog or cat is around 80 years old in human years a 16 year old medium sized dog is around 87 and a 16 year old large dog is around 120 in human years. A cat reaches the approximate human age of 15 during its first year then 24 at age 2. If they followed the pattern of a dog a 20 year cat would be the equivalent of 140 years old and veterinary experts agree this could not be possible. Dogs age faster than people do. Domestic dogs with their wide spectrum of subspecies provide an interesting area of study as its recognized that larger dogs live far shorter lives than their smaller counterparts.
